Not everything goes to plan. We thought this was Not everything goes to plan.
We thought this was going to be a stunning patch of brilliant blue bachelor buttons and a little bit of ryegrass, but turns out the grass is taller and thicker than expected so the flowers appear few and far between.
Take me to your leader! The leader is the vertic Take me to your leader!

The leader is the vertical growth from which new branches will form. This tree's 2+ft long will probably be trimmed. This same tree had an extra long leader last year and it still has a bamboo support we tied on last year. We left the leader long to see how it would send out new branches.

You can kind of tell if a leader is too long the top of the tree may not fill in and have consistent density as the lower part of the tree.

This is just one of the many things we need to monitor throughout the year and every year for the 5+ years before a tree ends up as a centerpiece of your Christmas holiday.
Our no-till sunflowers are coming up pretty well. Our no-till sunflowers are coming up pretty well. With the recent rains and bountiful sunshine, they should shoot up a lot in the next week.

Another milestone this week... we found a few scot Another milestone this week... we found a few scotch pines producing cones. While this is good because it means the trees are growing, its also a sign of more work. Cones are generally removed so the trees focus energy on producing branches and needles so you get a nice, full Christmas tree. This tree could be yours as soon as Christmas 2025.

We're clearing to expand parking, create a loading zone for tree season, expand our retail tree lot for coming years, and clear a site for a small home (our camper is for sale, if anyone is interested in a 2022 camper that's never traveled anywhere but from the dealer to our farm, let us know).
BEEKEEPERS We're looking for a beekeeper or two BEEKEEPERS

We're looking for a beekeeper or two for a long-term mutual relationship. You manage the hives and harvest the honey and we'll keep the bees fed! We have acres of bee forage in bloom from April to October including clovers, sunflowers, buckwheat and other wildflowers. Plus we can sell that delicious Woods Tree Farm honey when we're open to the public during flower season or at Christmas time.

Please message or call if interested! 804-561-3375

Ready for Sunflower season??? The preliminary date Ready for Sunflower season??? The preliminary dates are set!

Of course, the exact dates are up to Mother Nature, so this could change. And as always, we'll put updates on our socials and website.

If you haven't heard, we're planning our biggest flower season yet. We're literally covering every bit of open space in flowers this year - several acres worth! Its going to look amazing and we'll have lots of selfie stations set up for photos.

Hayrides will also be offered and will have a few other exciting things going on that we'll share more details about as the opening date approaches.

Our pine and spruce trees are doing their spring t Our pine and spruce trees are doing their spring thing!!

Its always so rewarding to see fresh growth, but at the same time this is a sign of more work to come... As soon as the pine trees shoot off their new needles, they'll need to be sheared to improve their shape and density. The spruce will be sheared later toward the summer.

A fellow Christmas tree farmer recommended we recr A fellow Christmas tree farmer recommended we recreate this photo from our first planting in 2019. You can see what a couple years of tree growth (and kid growth) looks like here. 😍

This is a great visual representation of the biggest challenge for a small choose-and-cut Christmas tree farm like ours.

It commonly takes at least 6-7 years to grow Christmas trees to market size. And that whole time the fields need to be mowed, fertilized, pests managed, trees trimmed, mortgage paid, property taxes paid, etc. - adding significantly to the overall time and cost invested in growing the trees.

There's so much more to it than plant a tree, wait a few years, collect gobs of money.

The number of Christmas tree farms has diminished over the past 30+ years for a host of reasons, but the key driver is there are simply many more financially productive ways to use the land.

For a lot of people across the country, the real Christmas tree farm experience is becoming more and more difficult to find.

Our dream is to develop Woods Tree Farm into a sustainable business where local families will have memorable experiences for decades to come. Its a work in progress, but with your continued support, we know we'll reach and achieve that dream.

We're so thankful for all of you who have supported us over the past couple years through our seasonal events, buying a pre-cut tree from us at Christmas time, or even just watching from afar on Youtube. We have invested everything we've made and more back into growing the farm and improving the experience for farm visitors.

Whether you're local or not, there are at least a handful of ways you can support us as we pursue our dream. More details at https://www.woodstreefarm.com/support
💐🌻This spring weather has us thinking about 💐🌻This spring weather has us thinking about FLOWER SEASON!! 💐🌻

The only review we've ever received with less than 5-stars indicated we should have a lot more flowers given the size of our property.

While we did pretty darn good planting everything BY HAND, I think they're right. We have several acres of open space that would look amazing if filled with flowers!

This week Phil traveled up to Pennsylvania to pick up a new piece of equipment that will make hand-planting sunflowers a thing of the past.

We're going to go BIG this year and will have multiple flower events over the course of the summer and into the fall. Hope to see you and your friends at the farm!

Got an early start this morning filling in the fie Got an early start this morning filling in the field where we had dead trees with fresh seedlings from Virginia department of forestry. Unfortunately we had heavy losses again due to a dry fall and many surviving white pine have been eaten by deer. Not too discouraged though as we can slowly but surely see the field filling in with future Christmas trees
Last weekend we got the chance to help plant trees Last weekend we got the chance to help plant trees for a fellow tree farmer who isn't able to plant due to some health issues. In the few years we've been in this business, we noticed farmers aren't like a lot other business owners where everyone fends for themselves. Farmers share knowledge, tools and equipment, and more. Tree farmers are in a unique and challenging position because it takes at least 6-7 years to grow most Christmas trees. Skipping a planting now would have lasting impacts for years down the road. Glad we were able to help a little. ((Sorry a few pics were blurry. I didn't realize my camera was in portrait mode)
